The Zhaga Consortium is a global, non-profit industry organization dedicated to standardizing the interfaces of components used in LED luminaires. The founding members included major lighting manufacturers Philips, OSRAM, and Tridonic, along with other industry players such as Acuity Brands Lighting, Panasonic, Toshiba, Schréder, TRILUX, Cooper Lighting, and Zumtobel Group.

The organization takes its name from the Zhaga waterfall located in Sichuan, China. Since its formation, it has grown to include more than 300 member companies from across the globe, spanning luminaire manufacturers, LED module producers, component suppliers, semiconductor companies, and independent testing laboratories.

Zhaga’s core work involves developing technical specifications, known as Books, that define how LED components should interface with one another. These specifications cover electrical, mechanical, optical, thermal, and communication properties. The goal is to ensure that components produced by different manufacturers are interoperable and interchangeable, so that a luminaire can be serviced, upgraded, or repaired using parts from various certified suppliers without compatibility issues.

What Zhaga Does and Why It Matters

Before Zhaga existed, the LED lighting market was highly fragmented. Each manufacturer produced components with unique dimensions, connector types, and electrical properties. This made it difficult for buyers to mix parts from different suppliers, and it created a situation where a facility manager replacing a single LED module often had to source the exact same brand and model, regardless of cost or availability.

Zhaga addressed this problem by bringing competing manufacturers together to agree on shared interface specifications. Once a component is certified against a Zhaga Book, it can be used in any luminaire designed around that same Book, regardless of who made either part. This is comparable to how standardized electrical plug formats work in household wiring, where devices and sockets from different manufacturers follow a common physical and electrical standard.

From a practical standpoint, this benefits every part of the supply chain. Luminaire designers can source LED modules or drivers from multiple vendors. Facility managers can replace failed components without being locked into a single supplier. Contractors have access to a broader range of service parts. And manufacturers can focus on improving the performance and efficiency of their products rather than redesigning proprietary interfaces.


The Zhaga Books: Interface Specifications Explained

Zhaga publishes its technical standards as numbered Books. Each Book defines the requirements for a specific type of LED component or interface. The specifications within each Book address dimensions, electrical tolerances, thermal behavior, and in more recent Books, communication protocols for smart lighting systems.

In the earlier years of the Consortium, the Books focused primarily on physical interchangeability, such as matching dimensions and connector types. Starting in 2018, Zhaga broadened its scope to cover interoperability, which goes further than simple physical fit. Interoperability means that components not only physically connect but also communicate and function together correctly across electrical and digital interfaces. This shift was driven by the growing importance of smart lighting, where luminaires need to interact with sensors, controllers, and building management systems.


Certification Programs

Zhaga runs a formal certification program that allows manufacturers to have their products independently tested and verified by Authorized Test Centers. Only products that pass testing against a specific Book are permitted to carry the Zhaga certification logo. The logo appears on the product, its packaging, and related documentation. Certification is available to Regular and Associate members of the Consortium, as well as subsidiaries of member companies.

The certification process begins with membership confirmation and signing of the Zhaga Logo License Agreement. The member then submits the product to an accredited Authorized Test Center. If the product meets all requirements, the manufacturer receives a certificate and the product is listed in the publicly accessible Zhaga Product Database on the Consortium’s website.


Membership Structure

Membership in the Zhaga Consortium is open to any company that is willing to work toward the organization’s goals of standardization and interoperability. Members include luminaire manufacturers, LED module producers, driver and component suppliers, optics companies, materials vendors, semiconductor firms, research institutions, and testing laboratories.

Technical work within the Consortium is carried out through working groups and task forces. Members contribute engineering expertise and share knowledge openly within the bounds of the Zhaga Code of Conduct, which sets out guidelines related to competition law and anti-trust compliance. Recent companies to join the Consortium as Regular Members include Khatod (optoelectronics, 2024), Huayu, and Ledlink Optics.


Smart City Lighting and the Zhaga-D4i Ecosystem

One of the most significant developments in Zhaga’s history was the introduction of Book 18 in 2019, which created a standardized mechanical and electrical interface between outdoor luminaires and sensing or communication modules. This allowed cities and infrastructure managers to add IoT sensors, traffic monitors, environmental sensors, and wireless communication nodes to street luminaires without modifying the luminaire itself.

Book 18 was developed in alignment with widely used standards including ANSI and NEMA guidelines, and it provides four low-voltage connections through a DC power source. The Zhaga-D4i certification, developed jointly with the DALI Alliance, extended this further by adding a digital communication layer based on the DALI-2 and D4i protocols. A D4i-certified driver can power connected nodes, store operational data, report energy consumption, and communicate error messages, all through a single standardized interface.

Book 20 brought the same approach to indoor luminaires, enabling commercial buildings to integrate smart sensors and control nodes into ceiling fixtures without proprietary hardware. Products certified under both Zhaga and D4i can carry both logos, indicating full plug-and-play compatibility with the broader ecosystem of sensors and luminaires from any certified manufacturer.


Sustainability and the Circular Economy

Zhaga has developed a formal sustainability framework it refers to as Circularity Lighting. This framework aligns the LED lighting industry with circular economy principles, which prioritize keeping products and components in use for as long as possible, reducing waste, and enabling repair and upgrade rather than full replacement.

The core idea is that a luminaire designed around Zhaga-certified component interfaces can be serviced at the component level. If an LED module reaches end of life, it can be replaced with any Zhaga-certified equivalent, regardless of the original manufacturer. If communication technology evolves, a facility can swap out the sensor module in Book 18-equipped street lights without replacing the pole or housing.

This approach directly reduces the volume of electronic waste generated by large lighting infrastructure projects. It also protects long-term investment, since Zhaga-certified luminaires remain serviceable and upgradeable as technology changes, rather than becoming obsolete when a specific proprietary part is discontinued.

Zhaga is working with regulatory bodies and standards organizations globally to ensure its specifications support compliance with evolving legislation around product repairability and sustainability. The Consortium also runs task forces specifically focused on reviewing existing Books and documenting how each specification contributes to circularity goals.
